ARABICMETAL:The most famous Israeli metal band returns with its sixth studio album, Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs. Orphaned Land has always done things its own way, even if it meant they would suffer backlash from their nation’s government. On its 13 tracks, the band creates lush harmonies, swirling Middle Eastern melodies, soaring choirs, and creative instrumentation. The band’s adventurous take on Arabic metal with Indian/Hindi overtones is performed with precision. Orphaned Land stands so far above its peers within the Middle Eastern heavy metal genre that there’s really no comparison. Soaring vocal harmonies, swirling Arabic melodies, and a tight rhythm section greet the opener “The Cave.” The track’s various twists and turns make it abundantly clear of what lies ahead during the 65 minute runtime. “Chains Fall to Gravity,” “In Propaganda,” and “Like Orpheus” possess enormous prog rock elements in the vein of early Genesis. In fact, former Genesis guitar legend Steve Hackett lends his iconic skills on the former, while Blind Guardian’s Hansi Kürsch adds his dynamic voice on the latter. On Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs, Orphaned Land hasn’t deviated from its sound from its last two albums. It’s a formula they’ve successfully stuck with throughout their entire career, while still managing a few surprises that keep their tried and true style fresh. ~ Kelley Simms
