Beach Weather

Pierce the Veil’s I Can’t Hear You tour stopped at the Kia Forum for three sold-out shows on June 26 and 27 and then back on July 1 after a stop in Las Vegas. Beach Weather opened the shows. When they took the stage, it appeared an alt-country act was about to perform, but they quickly settled into a much poppier than expected set of alternative indie pop. They ended with the pop perfection vibes of their hit “Sex, Drugs, Etc.”

Sleeping with Sirens

Taking the stage with frenetic energy, Sleeping with Sirens was up next with a beautiful set of controlled chaos. Opener “Kick Me” set the pace and the bar high. It was as much a visual and aerial assault as a sonic one. Vocalist Kellin Quinn was all over the stage with his signature moves, with guitarist Nick Martin and bassist Justin Hills going up, down, and all around with their jumps.

Sleeping with Sirens

The performance was heavy on songs from Let’s Cheers to This and Madness, but still represented their entire discography well. It was clear the fans weren’t just waiting for closing song “If You Can’t Hang” because they were as high energy as the band from the first to final notes.

Pierce the Veil

The anticipation, and some anxiety, inside the Forum was building before Pierce the Veil took the stage. It’s been barely more than a month since the band’s longtime friend, agent, and manager Dave Shapiro, tragically died in a plane crash with five other of the band’s friends and colleagues. Fans wondered what the show would be like. It’s been said the band had been looking exhausted and sad on other tour stops since the crash. At times, there was visible anguish on the faces of frontman Vic Fuentes and guitarist Tony Perry, but the band powered through a performance worthy of three sell-out dates at the Forum. There were hints of melancholy and sadness, but the band’s performance belied any exhaustion.

Pierce the Veil

Pierce the Veil broke out “Pass the Nirvana” for the third song after a blistering performance of “Bulls in the Bronx.” When released, the song got some pushback from fans for being different from PTV’s earlier work, but oddly enough, it seemed to put both the band and crowd in sync and meld the old with the new. The set was a few songs lighter than earlier in the tour, but it was still a full hour and a half of fan favorites. One notable exception was “Caraphernelia,” which didn’t make an appearance on any of the three nights at the Forum. However, the crowd was treated to “King for a Day” complete with Kellin Quinn guesting as the final encore each night. Despite the personal turmoil of the recent tragedy, Pierce the Veil put on an outstanding performance, no disclaimer needed.
