The post-hardcore emo supergroup L.S. Dunes brought The Like Magick Tour in support of their latest album release Violet to the Belasco on Friday, May 9. This stop of the tour featured a powerhouse lineup that spanned multiple genres.

Southern California’s own Plague Vendor opened the night with a blistering set of powerful post-punk. Singer Brandon Blaine led the band with raw punk rock energy reminiscent of Iggy Pop. He was a frenetic showman all over the stage, often with his feet in the air, and Starcrawler’s Henri Cash was on guitar. While he may have been all smiles, he fit right in with Plague Vendor’s self-anointed “graveyard groove.”

From Indian Lakes was up next with a set that seemed like straight shoe-gaze sandwiched between the hyper-energetic frontmen of Plague Vendor and L.S. Dunes. Joe Vann (Joey Vannucchi) led the band with his ethereal vocals. Their new album Head Void has been well-received by critics for its intricate and atmospheric sounds.

Cranking the volume back up, L.S. Dunes took the stage. Vocalist Anthony Green, also of Circa Survive, Saosin, and The Sound of Animals Fighting, quickly jumped off stage before starting the set to greet the fans posted at the barricade in anticipation of the headliners. Green has solidified his status as a leading frontman and L.S. Dunes’ supergroup classification.

Further cementing the supergroup status were My Chemical Romance’s Frank Iero and Thursday’s Tim Payne and Tucker Rule on the rhythm section. Since Travis Stever is on tour with Coheed and Cambria, Evan Nestor of Frank Iero’s solo projects (Frank Iero and the Patience, Frank Iero and the Future Violents, and frnkiero andthe cellabration) filled in for Stever.

The band played an intense set with a good mix of songs from their debut Past Lives and this year’s Violet. The pit was a giant sea of bodies dancing and crowd-surfing. The band fed off the energy and kept giving it back. This energetic exchange didn’t stop until the final encore. Read more about the band in the magazine. L.S. Dunes is on the cover of Outburn issue 111 on sale now.
