Eclectic pop rock duo 18th & Addison, composed of couple Tom and Kait Kunzman, joined forces with The Color Fred/ex-Taking Back Sunday’s Fred Mascherino to create their latest upbeat single and video “Broke Down in Babylon.”
“This is the first time we’ve ever collaborated with someone outside of one another and we couldn’t be more proud of it or proud to have worked alongside Fred,” Kait said. “We felt like this song was a perfect blend of electronic elements we’ve been wanting to incorporate in our music for a while, all while sticking to our roots in pop rock. The fusion of the two worked really well and just felt right.”
“Kait and Tom are the best! It was a pleasure working on Babylon with them,” Fred said. “They have such great chemistry writing together and I’m all about getting the vision and vibe for the song so once we got in the studio, things started to flow really easily. I think we were all pretty damn satisfied when we listened to the finished mix that first time.”
To keep safe during the pandemic, the couple chose to make the music video completely DIY. “We’ve directed past videos of our’s using rented gear and a small team to help us, but this music video was our first time self-filming with whatever we had at our disposal during this pandemic which was simply an iPhone 11, a couple of white tablecloths from the dollar store, and old stage lights we used to use for shows,” explained Tom. “Keeping things COVID safe, extremely DIY, and creative, it was a really liberating thing for us during all of this.”
By fearlessly blending all of their musical influences from Punk Rock, 80’s New Wave and post punk to modern pop, 18th & Addison are cultivating a style of music to proudly call their own. With their ferociously honest yet poetic lyrical content, unapologetic punch-in-the-gut guitar riffs and power house drumming to drive it all home and keep you dancing, they are proving that they are a serious force to be reckoned with.
